The Secret to the Perfect Fit: How to Use Hat Re-Sizers

We’ve all been there. You find the perfect fedora or a stunning straw sun hat, but it’s just a fraction too large. Maybe it sits a little too low on your brow, or perhaps a sudden breeze in the British countryside makes you worry it might take flight.

What is a Hat Re-Sizer?

Our hat sizers are discreet, strips designed to sit hidden inside your hat.; making them the perfect to reduce a hat by about half a size (approx. 0.5-1cm). 

Your Step-by-Step Guide to a Better Fit

1. Find the "Gap"

Before you start, pop your hat on and look in the mirror. Does it feel loose at the sides, or is there a gap at the front and back? Most people find that placing the sizers at the front and/or back provides the most secure fit and keeps the hat level.

2. Prepare the Inner Band

Turn your hat upside down. Most structured hats, like our Wool Fedoras or Straw Trilbies, have an internal sweatband (a fabric or leather ribbon). Gently flip this band up towards the center of the hat.

3. The "Dry Run"

Don't peel the adhesive backing off just yet! Place the foam strip against the inside wall of the hat crown and flip the sweatband back over it. Try the hat on to test the tension.

  • Top Tip: If the hat is still a bit loose, you might need a second strip at the opposite end.

4. Secure the Sizer

Once you’re happy with the placement, peel off the paper backing to reveal the adhesive. Press the strip firmly against the inside wall of the hat (the crown), not the sweatband itself. This ensures the strip stays hidden and won't catch on your hair.

5. Smooth and Style

Fold the sweatband back down into its original position. The foam is now sandwiched invisibly between the hat and the band, providing a soft, cushioned, and secure fit.
